How we calculate how much house you can afford
To figure out what monthly mortgage payment you can comfortably afford, start with your gross annual income (what you earn before taxes). Include all income sources, such as salary, hourly wages, tips, bonuses, and commissions.
If you share finances with a spouse or partner who will contribute to the mortgage, add their income too to get your total household gross annual income. Then divide that yearly total by 12 to estimate your monthly income.
